This is a live-action film based on a manga with the same title written by Gamon Sakurai.
Alright, I didn’t intend to write a review about this movie initially, but after watching it, I figured it’s worth writing one. I actually watched this with my parents in the cinema, so yeah. While watching it, my mom kept asking me why it’s so violent. It’s R-16 mom. Violence is to be expected.
And oh right, before I dive into the review, I want to clear up that I only read the first few chapters of the manga a few years ago, so this is a review coming from a person who has barely any knowledge about the story before watching the live-action adaptation. Note that this review might contain spoilers, but I’ll try to keep it spoiler-free. <(_ _)>
Story
After being hit by a truck (seems cliché not?), Kei Nagai (Takeru Satoh) dies, but he managed to revive. From the accident, Nagai discovers that he is a type of immortal known as Ajin (demi-human) which are considered to be dangerous by humans. He is the 3rd Ajin found in Japan and is wanted by the government. After being found by the government, Nagai was sent to a research facility. The official statement provided by the government is that Ajin will be protected in the research facility. But in fact, Ajin will undergo torturous experiments like guinea pigsヽ( `д´*)ノ SO THEIR LIMPS WILL BE CUT OFF AGAIN AND AGAIN, THE ENDLESS CYCLE OF LIFE AND DEATH SHALL BEGINS.
Sato (Gou Ayano), both an Ajin and a terrorist, is the only one to extend a helping hand to Nagai and saved him from the research facility, but Nagai refused to take part in Sato’s plans to commit mass murders against humans. Koji Tanaka (Yuu Shirota), who was saved by Sato from the research facilities after being tortured by the humans for 2 years, is also part of the operation to save Nagai and Sato’s plan to commit mass murders against humans.
It’s basically a Ajin vs Human kinda thing. And then there’s Nagai who just wanna live in peace ⊂( ´ ▽ ` )⊃ Ok, not really. I mean, he just doesn’t want to kill the humans even though they tortured him so much. It seems that there’ll be sequel to this movieヽ(・∀・)ノ from what I can tell from the ending. Overall, I do like the story as there’s a lot of twists in it which gives me EXCITEMENT. So stay tuned for the unexpected plot twists!
Characters
I feel that the protagonist, Kei Nagai, is not given enough attention, or maybe the antagonist, Sato, took too much attention from him. Though I think it’s just for this adaptation, it doesn’t seem to be the case in the original manga. The protagonist in the live-action film simply doesn’t really grab my attention until the final fighting scene with Sato vs Nagai. The actors did a pretty good job with their acting though and hoLY, I must mention that the action is very well done in this one. After all, the live-action film project has invited the action filming team of the live-action Rurouni Kenshin to work on the project. BEAUTIFUL. and yes, Satoh acted as Kenshin in Rurouni Kenshin (´。• ω • `)
Sato in the live-action film seems so much younger than the one in the manga. HhmmMMmMmm, but he is quite likable. I mean, I like him. I like Tanaka too. THE ANTAGONISTS ARE TOO BEAUTIFULLY PORTRAYED IN THIS LIVE-ACTION FILM. So cool, such nice body, めっちゃイケメン!!(≧◡≦) ♡ I wonder if I’ll like them this much if I only read the manga (or watch the anime)…
Takeru Satoh is handsome too, but I don’t think this film manage to fully show his beauty..? Though I do find the final fighting scene pretty cool. I just hope more development would be given to the protagonist o(>< )o
The fighting scene between Izumi Shimomura (Rina Kawaei) and Tanaka is nicely executed too. I was constantly rooting for Shinomura even though I do like Tanaka. GALS CAN BE STRONG YALL!!
If you’re a manga reader/anime watcher, you’ll notice that there’s no Kaito in this adaptation. NO CHILDHOOD FRIEND :0
Music
I think the music in this movie is well used and suits nicely to the theme of the movie. The theme song “Black Memory” by The Oral Cigarettes is pretty good too. (I like the band after all:>)

Pardon this poor-quality screenshot i took from the trailer. I swear it’s much better when you see it in the movie (*_ _)人
Nothing much to say, because it’s done BEAUTIFULLY! The CG animation of the black ghosts and invisible black matter (IBM) doesn’t feel awkward at all. In fact, they all suit nicely into the live-action film! One thing I’m scared about live-action adaptations of manga/anime/visual novel/games with supernatural elements, is the potential of having poorly done CG animation that don’t sit in nicely in a real life scene. But worry not, because this Ajin live-action movie nailed it!
Conclusion
This movie is very much comparable to Death Note live-action film (2006) and Rurouni Kenshin live action film. I love them o( ❛ᴗ❛ )o

I can’t say if it’s a well-adapted live-action film or not as I’ve only read a few chapters of the manga a few years ago. But I do enjoy this film. Very much in fact. It made me wanna pick up the manga again!
Is this movie worthy of your time? A definite YES.
Is this worthy of your money to watch it in the cinema? A non-hesitant YES too!
